    Geography<\/h2>\n

    KEEA runs along the shore immediately west of Cape Coast and reaches a short way inland. The coast is a mix of rocky headlands and sandy bays, with the Benya lagoon at Elmina and the Sweet River further west. Inland the ground rises into farmland and light forest around Eguafo and Abrem Agona. Cape Coast<\/a> adjoins it to the east, and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira<\/a> lies inland to the north.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Elmina is one of Ghana’s main canoe fishing ports, and the harbour on the Benya lagoon sets the pace of the town: landings in the morning, smoking and trading through the day. Farming inland runs to cassava, maize, vegetables, oil palm and coconut. Tourism is substantial. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 and the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Fort St Jago stands on the hill opposite. Brenu beach draws weekend visitors. The Bakatue festival is held at Elmina in July.<\/p>\n

    Fante is the everyday language. Elmina keeps an unusually strong Asafo company tradition, and the posuban shrines of the companies stand around the town. Eguafo and Komenda are older settlements than Elmina itself, and Komenda has a long history of sugar cane growing. The municipality’s inland villages send produce to the Elmina and Cape Coast markets.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Elmina lies about 13 km west of Cape Coast on the N1 coastal highway, an easy taxi or trotro ride. From Accra the drive is roughly 155 km along the same road; from Takoradi it is about 70 km east. Komenda and the inland villages are reached by branch roads off the highway.<\/p>\n
