Dormaa is a district area in the Bono Region of Ghana, in the west of the region near the border with C\u00f4te d’Ivoire. Its capital is Dormaa Ahenkro. The former Dormaa District has since been divided; the central portion is now Dormaa Central Municipal District, which recorded a population of 112,702 at the 2021 census, against 112,111 in 2010. The outlying areas became the separate Dormaa East and Dormaa West districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Dormaa sits in the western Bono Region, its western flank running towards the international boundary with C\u00f4te d’Ivoire. The land is forest country, wetter than the north of the region, and cut by small streams feeding the Tano basin. Dormaa Ahenkro is the traditional seat of the Dormaa state and the largest town. Rainfall is heavier and better spread than in the northern districts, which is why tree crops do well here.<\/p>\n

    The two districts carved out of the former Dormaa District are Dormaa East<\/a>, with its capital at Wamfie, and Dormaa West<\/a>, based at Nkrankwanta. Berekum<\/a> lies to the north-east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Dormaa is best known in Ghana for commercial poultry. Broiler and layer farms cluster around Dormaa Ahenkro and supply eggs and birds to markets well beyond the region. Crop farming runs alongside it: cocoa, oil palm, plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize. Feed milling, transport and the Dormaa Ahenkro market form the commercial core of the area.<\/p>\n

    Cocoa purchasing clerks operate in the farming villages through the main season, and sawmilling has long drawn on the surrounding forest. Smaller communities such as Asunso and Kofiasua are farming settlements whose households sell into the Dormaa Ahenkro market.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Dormaa Ahenkro lies about 80 kilometres west of Sunyani by road, through Berekum, and the drive takes under two hours. Buses and shared taxis run the Sunyani\u2013Berekum\u2013Dormaa route all day. Roads continue west to Nkrankwanta and south into the forest districts.<\/p>\n
