Dormaa West is a district in the Bono Region of Ghana, in the south-west of the region on the border with C\u00f4te d’Ivoire. Its capital is Nkrankwanta. The district had a population of 47,913 at the 2021 census, close to the 47,678 counted in 2010. It was carved out of the former Dormaa District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Dormaa West occupies the south-western corner of the Bono Region, with the international boundary with C\u00f4te d’Ivoire along its western side. This is the wettest part of the region: moist semi-deciduous forest, forest reserves and small streams draining towards the Tano. Nkrankwanta and Dormaa Agogo are the main towns. Rain falls in two seasons and totals more here than anywhere else in the region.<\/p>\n

    It adjoins Dormaa<\/a> to the north-east and lies south-west of Dormaa East<\/a> and Berekum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa dominates. Oil palm, plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize are grown alongside it, and timber from the forest reserves has long been worked here. Poultry keeping follows the pattern set in the wider Dormaa area. Nkrankwanta’s market serves the farming communities and handles cross-border trade with settlements over the frontier.<\/p>\n

    Cocoa buying runs from October, and licensed companies keep depots in the larger farming villages. Plantain and cocoyam are sold into Dormaa Ahenkro and Sunyani. Many of the settlements listed below are farm hamlets named for their founders, a common pattern across the Dormaa area.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Nkrankwanta is reached from Dormaa Ahenkro by road heading south-west, about an hour, or roughly two and a half hours from Sunyani through Berekum and Dormaa Ahenkro. Vehicles run daily, though services thin out in the afternoon. Nkrankwanta also has road links south into the forest districts and west towards the frontier. Feeder roads to the farm hamlets are earth and slow going during the heavier rains.<\/p>\n
