The land is moist semi-deciduous forest, well suited to tree crops, and streams draining the district feed the Tano basin. Wamfie and Kyeremasu are the largest settlements. Rain is well spread through the year, with peaks in May and October, and the soils suit cocoa and oil palm.

It borders Dormaa to the west, Berekum to the north and Sunyani to the east.

Economy and Local Life

Cocoa is the backbone of the district, grown with oil palm, plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize. Poultry farming has spread here from neighbouring Dormaa, and small commercial flocks are common. Wamfie and Kyeremasu hold the main markets, where cocoa purchasing clerks, food traders and farmers do business. Sawmilling and transport provide other wage work.

The cocoa season sets the rhythm of the year, with buying running from October into the early months. Food crops are sold year-round into Sunyani, which is close enough for daily trips. Villages such as Asuotia, Kyeremasu and Wamanfo are farming settlements served by feeder roads off the main tarred route.

Getting There

Wamfie sits on the Sunyani–Dormaa Ahenkro road, about an hour and a quarter from Sunyani by car. Shared taxis and minibuses run frequently in both directions, and connections to Berekum are straightforward. The trunk road is tarred, but the feeder roads serving the cocoa villages are earth and deteriorate in the rains. Kyeremasu lies a short distance off the main road to the north.

FAQ

What is the capital of Dormaa East?

Wamfie is the district capital.

Which region is Dormaa East in?

Dormaa East is in the Bono Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Dormaa East?

The 2021 census recorded 67,899 people, up from 50,871 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed here?

This page lists 40 settlements, from Achochoboso to Yerusalem.

Dormaa East is a district in the Bono Region of Ghana, west of Sunyani.
