Wenchi town is a road junction: the highway from Techiman divides here, one arm running north towards Bole and Wa, the other west towards Nsawkaw and Banda. Slopes around the town are gentle, and seasonal streams drain north to the Black Volta. Rainfall comes in one main season, and the harmattan is felt strongly from December to February.

Neighbouring districts in the region include Tain to the west and Sunyani West to the south.

Economy and Local Life

Wenchi is farming country. Yam is the signature crop, with maize, cassava, cowpea, groundnut, tomato and increasingly cashew. Wenchi’s market is one of the larger yam and food markets in the region and supplies traders travelling to Kumasi and Accra. Livestock rearing, agro-input trading and transport services round out the local economy.

Yam mounds are made late in the dry season and harvested from about July. Traders load lorries at Wenchi for the southern cities, and the junction position keeps roadside commerce busy. Outlying communities such as Badu, Boase and Droboso farm and sell into the town market.

Getting There

Wenchi sits about 60 kilometres north of Sunyani and roughly 30 kilometres west of Techiman, both under an hour and a half by road. Long-distance buses running between Kumasi and the Upper West pass through the town, so seats are usually available. Roads west from Wenchi lead to Nsawkaw and Banda, and shared taxis cover the shorter hops to the surrounding villages through the day.

FAQ

What is the capital of Wenchi?

Wenchi town is the capital of the Wenchi Municipal District.

Which region is Wenchi in?

Wenchi is in the Bono Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Wenchi?

The 2021 census recorded 124,758 people, up from 89,739 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed here?

This page lists 50 settlements, from Aboabo to Wankyi.

Wenchi is a municipal district in the Bono Region of Ghana, in the north-east of the region.
