Wooded savanna and farmland dominate, with surviving groves of semi-deciduous forest, the largest of them the sanctuary woodland at Boaben and Fiema. Streams here drain east towards the Volta basin. The main rainy season runs from April to July, with a shorter second peak in September and October.

Its regional neighbours include Nkoranza South to the south-west, Kintampo South to the north and Atebubu-Amantin to the east.

Economy and Local Life

Farming is the mainstay. Households grow yam, maize, cassava, plantain, groundnuts, cowpea and vegetables, and cashew has become a leading cash crop across the district. Livestock keeping, charcoal production and petty trade fill the dry season. The population fell between the two censuses, which reflects steady movement of young people to Techiman, Kumasi and Accra for work and schooling.

Busunya holds the district assembly and the main weekly market. At Boaben and Fiema, mona and black-and-white colobus monkeys live among the villages and are protected by long-standing local taboo rather than by fencing; the sanctuary draws visitors and school groups and supports guides, guesthouses and food sellers.

Getting There

Busunya is reached from Nkoranza town, which sits on the Techiman–Ejura road roughly 30 kilometres south-west. From Techiman, the regional capital, the trip takes about an hour by road. Shared taxis and minibuses run from Nkoranza to Busunya and on to Boaben and Fiema; the feeder roads are laterite and slower after heavy rain.

FAQ

What is the capital of Nkoranza North District?

Busunya is the district capital and the seat of the district assembly.

Which region is Nkoranza North in?

Nkoranza North is in the Bono East Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Nkoranza North?

The 2021 census recorded 56,468 residents, down from 65,895 at the 2010 census.

How many towns and communities are listed for Nkoranza North?

This page lists 31 towns and communities in the district.

Nkoranza North is a district in the Bono East Region of Ghana.
