Pru is a former district in the Bono East Region of Ghana, on the western arm of Lake Volta. In 2018 it was split into two units: Pru East, with its capital at Yeji, and Pru West, with its capital at Prang. This page covers the whole of the former Pru District, so it takes in both successor districts.<\/p>\n

At the 2021 census Pru East recorded 101,545 residents and Pru West 69,383, a combined 170,928 for the former district area. The matching 2010 figures were 72,799 and 56,449.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Pru occupies the eastern edge of the Bono East Region. Its long eastern boundary is water: the Volta, dammed at Akosombo, spreads here into a broad lake with drowned valleys and a shoreline of fishing camps. Inland the country is savanna woodland cut by the Pru River, after which the district is named. Rainfall is lower and the dry season longer than in the forest districts to the south-west.<\/p>\n

    Neighbouring districts inside the region include Atebubu-Amantin<\/a> to the south, Kintampo South<\/a> to the west and Sene<\/a> across the water to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Two economies run side by side. On the lake, Yeji is one of the busiest fishing ports on the Volta, with canoe crews, smoking ovens and fish traders who supply markets as far as Kumasi and Accra. Inland, farmers grow yam, maize, cassava, groundnuts and cashew, and cattle from the north are traded through the district.<\/p>\n

    Yeji is also a crossing point. The ferry between Yeji and Makango on the northern shore carries traders, vehicles and livestock, and market days draw sellers from both banks. Prang, on the main road, serves the western half of the former district as its trading and administrative centre.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Prang sits on the Kumasi\u2013Atebubu\u2013Yeji road, which links the district to the regional capital Techiman by way of Atebubu or Kintampo. From Prang the road continues north-east to Yeji on the lakeshore. Buses run daily from Kumasi and Techiman; travellers heading to the Northern Region continue by ferry from Yeji to Makango.<\/p>\n
