Kwabre, now Kwabre East, is a district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana on the northern edge of Kumasi. Its capital is Mamponteng. The district had a population of 296,814 at the 2021 census, against 115,556 in 2010, a jump driven by the city spreading into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Kwabre East lies immediately north-east of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and is one of the region’s smallest districts by area and densest by population. Its towns run into one another along the Kumasi–Mampong road: Mamponteng, Ahwiaa, Aboaso, Antoa, Asonomaso and Safo. The land is gently rolling former forest, now largely built up or under garden farming. It borders Afigya-Kwabre<\/a> to the west, Sekyere South<\/a> to the north, Ejisu Juaben<\/a> to the south-east and Kumasi to the south.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Kwabre East is the craft belt of Asante. Ahwiaa is the woodcarving town, Ntonso is known for adinkra cloth printing and Adanwomase for kente weaving, and all three sell to visitors and to traders in Kumasi. Beyond the crafts, the district lives on trade, transport, artisanal work and commuting into Kumasi, with vegetable and maize farming continuing on the remaining open land. Antoa is a well-known traditional shrine town.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is the everyday language and the district is thoroughly Asante in custom, with stools at Antoa, Asonomaso and Mamponteng. Craft work is family-based and passed down, and workshops line the roadside at Ahwiaa. Density is the district’s main pressure: schools, clinics and roads carry far more people than they were built for, and open farmland is disappearing into housing plots year by year.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Mamponteng is about 13 km from central Kumasi on the Kumasi–Mampong road, usually 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. City trotros and shared taxis serve Mamponteng, Ahwiaa and Antoa continuously from Kumasi, and every vehicle heading to Mampong passes through the district.<\/p>\n
