    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Sekyere East lies north-east of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, below and along the Mampong scarp. Effiduase, the district capital, and Asokore are the main towns, sitting where the forest gives way to farmed transition land. Streams off the scarp drain east towards the Afram. It borders Sekyere South<\/a> to the west, Sekyere Central<\/a> to the north-east, Ejisu Juaben<\/a> to the south and Sekyere Afram Plains<\/a> to the east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Food farming for Kumasi drives the district: maize, cassava, plantain, yam, tomatoes and garden eggs, with cocoa and oil palm in the wetter southern pockets. Poultry and small ruminants are kept widely. Effiduase’s market and lorry park are the collection point for produce heading down the Mampong road, and the town holds the district hospital and the main senior high schools.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is spoken throughout and Effiduase and Asokore are traditional stool towns within the Asante state. Effiduase holds the district assembly, hospital and senior high schools, and market day brings traders down from the scarp villages. Kumasi is close enough that many young people work or study there and return at weekends, which keeps the district’s population figures flatter than its farming base alone would suggest.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Effiduase is roughly 40 km north-east of Kumasi. The route runs on the Kumasi–Mampong road as far as Agona, then east on the tarred branch to Effiduase and Asokore. Trotros run from Kumasi’s Asafo station through the day; village roads beyond the tarred branch are laterite and slow after rain. Mampong, the nearest large town to the north, lies about 20 km away.<\/p>\n
