    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Adansi North sits in the south of the Ashanti Region, on the high forested ground of the Adansi hills above the Pra basin. Fomena, the district capital, is a traditional Adansi seat on the main road south from Kumasi, with Akrokerri, Ahensan and Dompoase among its larger towns. Rainfall is heavy and the terrain broken, so settlements follow the ridges and the road. It borders Adansi South<\/a> to the south, Obuasi<\/a> to the south-west, Bekwai<\/a> to the north and Bosome Freho<\/a> to the north-east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa, oil palm and citrus are the main cash crops, with plantain, cassava and cocoyam grown for food. Gold runs through this ground and small-scale mining is widespread, some of it licensed and much of it not; the district sits on the same reef that made neighbouring Obuasi a mining town. Akrokerri hosts a long-established college of education, and Fomena’s market and lorry park handle the district’s produce trade.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is spoken everywhere and Fomena is an Adansi traditional seat, so chieftaincy and the Adansi stool count in local affairs. Mining and farming pull in opposite directions here: galamsey pays cash quickly but damages the streams and farmland that cocoa depends on, and the tension is a standing local issue. Fomena and Akrokerri hold the district’s health facilities and secondary schools.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Fomena lies roughly 50 km south of Kumasi on the Kumasi–Obuasi–Dunkwa road, which runs through the district and carries all the through traffic. Trotros and taxis from Kumasi’s Asafo station serve Fomena and Akrokerri daily. Obuasi is about 15 km further south, so the district is easily reached from either direction.<\/p>\n
