Ahafo Ano South is a former district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, in the region’s north-west. It has been divided into two districts: Ahafo Ano South East, with its capital at Adugyama, and Ahafo Ano South West, with its capital at Mankranso. At the 2021 census the two counted 63,468 and 65,770 people, or 129,238 together, against 121,659 in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Ahafo Ano South occupies the north-west corner of the Ashanti Region, in the wet forest belt on the way to the Ahafo country. Rainfall is high and the land rolls in low forested ridges cut by small tributaries of the Offin and Tano systems. Mankranso and Adugyama are the two administrative towns, with Wioso, Sabronum and Biemso among the larger farming settlements. It borders Ahafo Ano North<\/a> to the north, Atwima Mponua<\/a> to the west, Atwima Nwabiagya<\/a> to the south-east and Offinso<\/a> to the north-east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    This is cocoa country first and foremost, with oil palm, citrus and plantain grown alongside it. Cassava, cocoyam and maize feed the households and fill the local markets. Timber and small-scale sawmilling remain part of the economy, and market days at Mankranso and Adugyama pull buyers from Kumasi for plantain, oranges and palm oil. Petty trading, transport and food processing employ most of those not on a farm.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is spoken throughout, with settler farming families from the north and from the Volta side long established in the cocoa villages. Mankranso holds the district hospital and the main second-cycle schools. Cocoa payments set the rhythm of trade: the main harvest between October and January is when money moves, and building work, school fees and bride-price payments cluster around it.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The district straddles the Kumasi–Sunyani highway, which is the simplest way in: Mankranso is roughly 40 km north-west of Kumasi and Adugyama a few kilometres closer. Trotros and buses on the Kumasi–Sunyani run stop at both towns through the day. Feeder roads to the outlying cocoa villages are untarred and heavy going after rain.<\/p>\n
