    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Sekyere Afram Plains occupies the far north-east of the Ashanti Region. It is the region’s most remote district, lying beyond the Sekyere hills on the plains drained by the Afram river, which forms the boundary with the Eastern Region and feeds the Volta Lake.<\/p>\n

    Drobonso is the district capital. The country is open savanna woodland rather than closed forest, and settlement is thin and scattered. Neighbouring districts include Sekyere East<\/a> to the west, Ejura Sekyedumase<\/a> to the north-west and Asante Akim North<\/a> to the south.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming is almost the whole economy. The plains grow yam, maize, cassava, groundnut, cowpea and vegetables, and land is available in a way it is not in the crowded forest districts, so migrant farmers come in from elsewhere in Ashanti and from the north.<\/p>\n

    Livestock keeping is widespread, and Fulani herders graze cattle across the plains. Fishing on the Afram river and the lake arm adds income for riverside settlements. Charcoal burning is common. Markets are few, and much produce is bought at the farm gate by traders who haul it to Kumasi and Konongo.<\/p>\n

    The district has one of the smallest and most scattered populations in Ashanti. Asante Twi is the common language, but settled migrant farmers and herders from northern Ghana make the plains communities mixed. Services are thin, and residents travel to Kumawu or Konongo for banking, secondary schooling and hospital care.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Drobonso is reached from Kumasi through Effiduase and Kumawu, a journey of about 130 km. The last stretch is unsurfaced and can take several hours.<\/p>\n

    Transport is limited to cargo vehicles and market-day trotros rather than a regular service. Several communities are cut off for periods in the rainy season when the feeder roads and stream crossings become impassable.<\/p>\n
