    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Bosome Freho lies in the southern half of the Ashanti Region, between the Lake Bosomtwe basin and the Adansi country to the south. The district is forest land with hills and small streams, and it takes its name from the Bosome and Freho traditional areas.<\/p>\n

    Asiwa is the capital. Neighbouring districts include Bosomtwe<\/a> to the north, Adansi South<\/a> to the south, and Asante Akim South<\/a> to the east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa is the principal cash crop, with plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize, rice and oil palm grown for food and for sale. Farm holdings are small and worked mainly by hand.<\/p>\n

    Asiwa hosts the district’s main market, where buyers from Kumasi and Bekwai take up foodstuffs. Palm oil processing, charcoal burning, sawn timber and petty trading give additional income, and some residents work in small-scale gold mining on the Adansi side of the district.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is the everyday language, and the district’s two traditional areas, Bosome and Freho, give it its name. Settlements are small and closely spaced, and the weekly market at Asiwa is the main point of contact between the farming villages and outside buyers.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Asiwa lies roughly 60 km south-east of Kumasi. The usual route runs through Bekwai or through Kuntanase and around the Lake Bosomtwe basin.<\/p>\n

    Trotros and shared taxis connect Asiwa with Bekwai and Kumasi. Many of the farming villages are on feeder roads that need a sturdy vehicle in the rainy season.<\/p>\n
