    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Atwima Mponua lies in the west of the Ashanti Region, on the boundary with the Western North and Ahafo areas. It is high forest country, hilly and wet, with forest reserves covering a large share of the land and the Offin river draining the eastern side.<\/p>\n

    Nyinahin, the capital, is known for the bauxite deposits in the hills above the town. Neighbouring districts include Atwima Nwabiagya<\/a> to the east, Amansie West<\/a> to the south-east and Ahafo Ano South<\/a> to the north.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa is the leading crop, and the district is one of the stronger cocoa producers in Ashanti. Farmers also grow plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize and oil palm, and much of the food crop moves to Kumasi.<\/p>\n

    Timber and sawmilling matter because of the forest reserves, and chainsaw operators work widely. Gold is mined on a small scale along the Offin and its tributaries. Nyinahin’s bauxite reserves have long been counted among Ghana’s largest, and mining prospects there shape local expectations. Nyinahin market is the main trading point.<\/p>\n

    Asante Twi is the everyday language. Cocoa villages here have long taken in migrant farm labour, so caretaker and abunu sharecropping arrangements are common on the farms. Market days at Nyinahin and the cocoa purchasing sheds set the weekly rhythm of the district.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Nyinahin is about 60 km west of Kumasi on the Kumasi–Bibiani road, a run of roughly 90 minutes through Abuakwa and Nkawie.<\/p>\n

    Trotros and cargo vehicles serve Nyinahin from Kumasi through the day. Cocoa villages off the trunk road rely on feeder roads that turn heavy in the long rains.<\/p>\n
