    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Asante Akim North occupies the eastern side of the Ashanti Region, running out towards the Afram plains and the Eastern Region boundary. The Asante Akim ranges rise across the district, and the land falls away northwards into open plains used for farming and grazing.<\/p>\n

    Agogo, the capital, is one of the older towns of eastern Ashanti. Neighbouring districts include Asante Akim South<\/a> to the south, Sekyere Afram Plains<\/a> to the north-west and Ejisu-Juaben<\/a> to the west.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming dominates. The district grows maize, yam, cassava, plantain, cocoyam and vegetables, and the plains to the north carry large tomato and cereal farms. Cattle keeping is significant here, more so than in the forest districts, and disputes over grazing and farmland are a standing local issue.<\/p>\n

    Agogo also serves the wider area as a service centre. Its long-established hospital, nursing training and senior high schools bring in patients, students and staff, which supports lodging, food and transport businesses. The Agogo and Juansa markets handle foodstuffs for buyers from Kumasi and Accra.<\/p>\n

    The Asante Akim traditional area holds the chieftaincy, and Asante Twi is the everyday language. Agogo’s hospital and schools give the town a settled, service-town character. The northern plains hold a mixed population of migrant farmers and herders from northern Ghana and beyond.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Agogo lies about 80 km east of Kumasi. The usual route is the Accra–Kumasi highway to Konongo, then north on the branch road to Agogo, a drive of under two hours.<\/p>\n

    Buses and trotros run daily between Agogo, Konongo, Kumasi and Accra. Roads north into the plains are largely unsurfaced and slow in the wet season.<\/p>\n
