Cocoa farming and food cropping carry the district. Plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize are the staples, and oil palm is grown on smaller plots. Hwidiem is the commercial centre, sitting on the Bechem\u2013Goaso road with a market that serves traffic in both directions. Acherensua is best known as a schooling town and adds a student population to local trade. Gold mining in the neighbouring district also draws labour from here.<\/p>\n
Hwidiem’s market day draws sellers from surrounding villages and from the neighbouring districts. Cocoa purchasing, transport of farm produce towards Kumasi and small roadside trading provide the cash economy; subsistence food farming underpins the rest. Charcoal burning and firewood sales are common dry-season activities.<\/p>\n
Getting There<\/h2>\n
Hwidiem is roughly 35 km south-west of Bechem on the road to Goaso, and about 40 km from Sunyani. From Kumasi the route runs through Tepa or Bechem in about two and a half hours. Shared taxis link Hwidiem, Acherensua and Kenyasi through the day.<\/p>\n
For Accra, travellers connect at Sunyani or Kumasi; there is no direct long-distance service from Hwidiem. The Bechem\u2013Hwidiem\u2013Goaso road is the district’s main artery and stays passable year round.<\/p>\n
