The terrain is undulating, with the Tano River basin to the east. It borders Asutifi South to the south and Tano North to the north-east, and shares its western side with Asunafo North.

Kenyasi No.1 and Kenyasi No.2 are separate but adjoining towns and are usually counted together as the capital. Ntotroso, Gyedu and Wamahinso lie along the same road corridor to the north. Mining has changed the landscape around them, with cleared concession land, haul roads and resettlement housing now part of the local geography.

Economy and Local Life

Two things drive the local economy. The first is cocoa, grown across the district alongside plantain, cassava, cocoyam and maize. The second is large-scale surface gold mining around Kenyasi and Ntotroso. It has reshaped land use and drawn workers, traders and landlords into the two Kenyasi towns. That inflow helps explain the 40 per cent population rise between the 2010 and 2021 censuses. Mining resettlement, haulage, catering and rented housing now sit alongside farming as everyday sources of income.

Food prices and rents in Kenyasi run above the Ahafo average because of that demand. Outside the mine’s immediate area the district looks like the rest of Ahafo: smallholder cocoa farms, food crops and small markets. Water quality, land compensation and post-mining land use are recurring local concerns.

Getting There

Kenyasi is about 45 km from Sunyani, reached through Bechem and Hwidiem. From Kumasi allow around two and a half hours on the Sunyani road, turning off at Bechem. The mine road between Kenyasi and Ntotroso is tarred and carries regular trotro traffic.

Accra is a long day’s journey away, usually broken at Kumasi. Within the district, the Kenyasi–Ntotroso–Gyedu road carries the most traffic, while feeder roads to Wamahinso and Gambia No.2 are earth surfaced.

FAQ

What is the capital of Asutifi North?

Kenyasi is the district capital and the seat of the district assembly.

Which region is Asutifi North in?

It is in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Asutifi North?

The 2021 population and housing census recorded 73,556 people, compared with 52,259 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed for Asutifi North?

This page lists 6 towns and communities across the district.

Asutifi North is a district in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.
