The land is gently rolling and drained by small streams that feed the Tano and Bia systems. Forest reserves and cocoa farms cover most of it, and the rainfall comes in two seasons, the heavier one from March to July. It borders Asunafo South to the south and west, and Asutifi South to the north-east. The Western North Region lies beyond its southern boundary.

Settlement follows the roads. Goaso, Mim and Akrodie form the built-up spine. Ampenkro, Gyasikrom, Pomaakrom and the other -krom names are farming hamlets founded by settler cocoa farmers. Many of those settlers came from the Ashanti and Volta areas. Distances between villages are short but feeder roads are earth surfaced and deteriorate in the rains.

Economy and Local Life

Cocoa is the backbone of the local economy. Farmers here also grow plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize and oil palm, and most households combine a food farm with a cocoa plot. Mim is the district’s timber town, with sawmilling and log haulage tied to the surrounding forest reserves. Goaso is the main trading centre, with the largest market, the banks and the district assembly offices. It draws buyers from Kukuom and Mim on market days. Petty trade, transport and small-scale food processing round out the picture.

Market day pulls traders in from the surrounding villages and from across the Western North boundary. Away from the towns, income is seasonal and tracks the cocoa harvest, which peaks between October and January. Farmer cooperatives, licensed cocoa buying companies and rural banks all operate out of Goaso.

Getting There

Goaso lies roughly 60 km south-west of Sunyani by road, reached on the Sunyani–Bechem–Hwidiem route. From Kumasi the usual approach is through Bechem and Hwidiem, about three hours. Trotros and shared taxis run daily between Goaso, Mim, Kukuom and Sunyani.

FAQ

What is the capital of Asunafo North?

Goaso is the district capital and the seat of the district assembly.

Which region is Asunafo North in?

It is in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Asunafo North?

The 2021 population and housing census recorded 150,198 people, compared with 124,685 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed for Asunafo North?

This page lists 15 towns and communities across the district.

Asunafo North is a municipal district in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.
