Bahir Dar (Amharic: ባሕር ዳር, lit. ’sea beach’) is the capital city of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.

Bahir Dar is a popular tourist destination in Ethiopia, with a range of attractions on the adjacent Lake Tana and Blue Nile River.

The city is famous for its broad avenues adorned with palm trees and a variety of vibrant flowers. In 2002, it received the UNESCO Cities for Peace Prize for resolving the issues of growing urbanization.

Bahir Dar is located at the Abbay’s outflow from Lake Tana, at an elevation of 1,820 metres (5,970 feet) above sea level.

The city is located around 578 kilometers north-northwest of Addis Ababa. The Lake Tana region has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015.

According to the 2007 Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) Census, the Bahir Dar Special Zone had a total population of 221,991, with 108,456 males and 113,535 females; 180,174 or 81.16% of the population lived in cities, with the remainder living in rural kebeles surrounding Bahir Dar.
