Towns and Villages in East Gojjam Zone

East Gojjam, also known as Misraq Gojjam, is a zone of Ethiopia’s Amhara Region. Its capital is Debre Markos. East Gojjam was named after the former province of Gojjam.

East Gojjam is bounded by the Oromia Region to the south, West Gojjam to the west, South Gondar to the north, and South Wollo to the east; the Zone’s northern, eastern, and southern boundaries are defined by the bend of the Abay River.

Its highest peak is Mount Choqa (also known as Mount Birhan). East Gojjam’s towns and cities include Bichena, Debre Marqos, Debre Werq, and Mota.

According to the 2007 Census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), this Zone has a total population of 2,153,937, a 26.68% increase over the 1994 census, with 1,066,716 men and 1,087,221 women; with an area of 14,004.47 square kilometers, East Gojjam has a population density of 153.80.
