The Rosetta branch of the Nile runs down its western edge past Fuwa and Desouk. The Mediterranean closes the north from El Burg east to the Dakahlia line. Between the two lies Lake Burullus, a shallow brackish lagoon of about 410 km&sup2; and a Ramsar-listed wetland. Wheat, sugar beet and maize fill the rest of the rotation. Fish farming has grown quickly on the reclaimed land around Lake Burullus.
