The lists below carry 349 named towns and villages recorded in the national gazetteer. Each is grouped by the markaz whose centre it sits closest to. The Rosetta branch forms its western boundary, the Damietta branch its eastern one, and a dense grid of canals and drains covers everything in between. Density is roughly 2,800 people per km2. There is no desert to absorb growth, so that figure applies to almost every hectare.<\/p>\n<p>Gharbia is more urban than its neighbour Monufia. Six districts are classed as fully urban, three in Tanta, two in El Mahalla El Kubra and one in Zefta. Together they held about 1.32 million people in January 2023, close to a quarter of the governorate. The rest live in the villages and izab of the eight markaz.<\/p>\n<h2>Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n<p>Cotton, rice, wheat, maize and clover are the main field crops. Gharbia is also one of Egypt&#8217;s leading potato growers, much of it for export. El Mahalla El Kubra is the industrial anchor. The Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, founded there in 1927 by Talaat Harb, is the largest textile plant in the country. It employs tens of thousands of workers, and its 2008 strike is still a reference point in Egyptian labour history.<\/p>\n<p>Kafr El Zayat runs chemical, fertiliser and cotton-ginning plants beside the Nile. Tanta has oil and soap works, flax processing and a large regional market. Village life follows the cotton and rice calendar. Each markaz town holds a weekly market, and daily commuters flow into Tanta and Mahalla.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Samannoud is the ancient city of Sebennytos, home of Manetho, the priest who wrote the dynastic history of Egypt in the third century BC. The temple of Isis at Behbeit el-Hagar, north of Samannoud, was begun under the 30th Dynasty and finished by the Ptolemies. Its granite blocks still lie where the building collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Tanta grew around the shrine of Ahmad al-Badawi, the 13th-century Sufi who founded the Badawiyya order. The moulid held at his mosque each October draws crowds counted in the hundreds of thousands and is the largest religious festival in Egypt. In 1919 the town of Zefta cut its bridges and declared itself an independent republic for several weeks during the revolution against British rule.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting There<\/h2>\n<p>Tanta is the main railway junction of the Delta. Four lines meet there, including the Cairo-Alexandria main line, and trains from both cities take between one and two hours. The Cairo-Alexandria Agricultural Road crosses the governorate and links Tanta, Kafr El Zayat and Basyoun.
