The governorate runs about 120 kilometres along the Nile. The floodplain is wider here than upstream, reaching 25 kilometres in places, which is why Asyut carries more farmland than any neighbour to its south. The Asyut Barrage, completed in 1902 and replaced by a new structure in 2018, lifts water into the Ibrahimiya Canal.
