Ikela Territory is divided into five sectors — Loile, Lofome, Lokina, Tumbenga and Tshuapa — and that sector-and-grouping structure is how the province organises its villages everywhere else too.

Geography

Tshuapa is unbroken lowland rainforest, the heart of the central Congo Basin. The Tshuapa River crosses the province from east to west and joins the Busira, which feeds the Ruki and then the Congo at Mbandaka. The Lomela, Lomako and Salonga rivers drain the south and north.

The province borders Équateur to the west, Mongala to the north, Tshopo to the east, and Sankuru, Kasaï and Mai-Ndombe to the south. Part of Salonga National Park, Africa’s largest tropical rainforest reserve at about 36,000 km², lies inside the province’s southern reaches around Monkoto.

The climate is tropical rainforest with no real dry season. Boende records roughly 2,066 mm of rain a year and temperatures between 20°C and 31°C.

Demographics

At about 15 people per km², Tshuapa is the least densely populated of the five provinces carved from old Équateur. Settlement follows the rivers and the few motorable tracks.

The Mongo peoples (Anamongo) are the majority. Other groups include the Ngombe, Bambole, Bayela, Balalia, Bangandu and Batwa. French is the language of government, Lingala is the trade language, and Lomongo is spoken across the interior.

Economy and Local Life

Subsistence farming and river fishing support most households. Cassava, plantain, rice, maize and groundnuts are the staples, and oil palm is cut for cooking oil and soap. Smoked fish from the Tshuapa and Lomela is the main cash trade.

Forest products — bushmeat, caterpillars, honey, raffia and timber — round out incomes. Coffee and rubber estates opened in the colonial period have largely collapsed. Boende is the collection point: produce comes in by pirogue and goes out on barges toward Mbandaka and Kinshasa.

Conservation is an unusual local employer here. Salonga National Park and the Lomako reserves fund ranger posts and research camps, and the province is one of the core ranges of the bonobo.

History

Tshuapa was a district of the old Équateur province from the colonial period until 2015, when the district became a province in its own right with Boende as capital. Boende was captured by mercenaries during the Simba rebellion in January 1964. Ikela was besieged for about a year in 1998 and 1999 during the Second Congo War, and around 15,000 residents fled; the town has been rebuilding since.

Getting There

Boende Airport takes the scheduled flights, mostly from Kinshasa via Mbandaka. Flying is the only fast option.

The river is the alternative and the local norm. Barges run from Kinshasa to Mbandaka in four to seven days, then continue up the Ruki and Tshuapa to Boende. Smaller boats and pirogues serve Bokungu, Ikela, Djolu and Monkoto. Roads inside the province are earth tracks that turn unusable in heavy rain, so plan around the boat schedule rather than the map.

FAQ

What is the capital of Tshuapa province?

Boende, a river port on the Tshuapa River with roughly 33,800 residents. It holds separate city (ville) status.

How many territories does Tshuapa have?

Six: Befale, Boende, Bokungu, Djolu, Ikela and Monkoto. The city of Boende is administered separately from the territory of the same name.

What is the population of Tshuapa?

About 1,944,500, projected for 2020. There has been no census in DR Congo since 1984, so all current figures are projections.

What language is spoken in Tshuapa?

French is official. Lingala is the everyday trade language and Lomongo is widely spoken by the Mongo peoples inland.

Is Salonga National Park in Tshuapa?

Part of it. The park spans several provinces, and its northern sector reaches into southern Tshuapa around Monkoto Territory.

Which river is Tshuapa named after?

The Tshuapa River, which flows west across the province and eventually reaches the Congo River through the Busira and Ruki.

Tshuapa is a province in north-west DR Congo, named after the Tshuapa River that runs through it.
