The province was Bas-Congo under Belgian rule, Bas-Za\u00efre from 1971 to 1997, then Bas-Congo again, and took the name Kongo Central in 2015. Unlike most provinces it was not split in the 2015 repartitioning that created 26 provinces — its boundaries were left intact. Boma served as the capital of the Congo Free State and Belgian Congo until 1923, when the seat moved to L\u00e9opoldville.<\/p>\n

The Matadi\u2013Kinshasa railway still runs freight and irregular passenger services. Matadi has an airport at Tshimpi; Muanda has an airport serving the oil sector.
