Both hundreds sit within a Murray River loop bounded by Cobdogla, Barmera, Loxton and Berri, the Riverland’s main irrigation towns, though those towns themselves lie just outside the county boundary. Citrus and grape growing on irrigated blocks within the loop are the main land use, drawing water pumped from the adjacent Murray. The rest of Hamley is unincorporated Mallee scrub and river-red-gum floodplain along the Murray. At 5,790 km², the county is large for its two hundreds, most of its area remaining unsurveyed floodplain and scrub rather than freehold farmland.
Geography
Hamley lies east of the Murray River, bounded by the river channel to the south, the eastern edge of the County of Young to the west, and the New South Wales and Victoria borders to the east. Katarapko, on the river, forms part of Katarapko Island’s wetland system, now within Murray River National Park, which protects the river red gum floodplain and its wetlands from further clearing.
History
Governor Fergusson proclaimed the county in 1869, but its two hundreds were not surveyed until decades later: Katarapko in 1922 and Loveday in 1923, once Riverland irrigation settlement had reached this stretch of the Murray. Loveday later gave its name to a World War II internment camp nearby, one of Australia’s largest, which held thousands of German and Italian internees between 1941 and 1946.
