The name derives from the Selwyn Range, named at an unknown date by the Surveyor-General, possibly at the suggestion of Robert Logan Jack (1845-1921). The range honours Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn (1824-1902), Director of the Geological Survey of Victoria, 1852–69.
