Name Origin
The county was presumably named by the Surveyor-General, on a date not recorded, after the Nicholson River. Explorer and naturalist Ludwig Leichhardt named that river on 20 August 1845, for Doctor William Alleyne Nicholson of Bristol, a personal friend and benefactor.
