History
Geologist and photographer Richard Daintree named the Etheridge River in 1869-70. The gazetteer offers two possible sources for that name: drover Donald O. Etheridge, who took cattle from Carpentaria Downs to Miranda Downs through the river valley in 1864, or, alternatively, palaeontologist Robert Etheridge of the Geological Survey of Great Britain. The county itself was named and bounded by the Governor in Council on 7 March 1901, under the Land Act 1897.
