Name Origin
The county’s name comes from the river name, first recorded by Edmund Kennedy (1818–1848). Kennedy recorded it in error: Aboriginal informants gave “Barka Amoo” for two separate rivers, the Barcoo and the Alice, and Kennedy wrote down Barcoo as the name of just one river.
