Geography
The county lies in the far western interior, roughly between latitudes 29°35′ and 30°20′ south. It borders Tongowoko County to the north, Delalah to the north-east, Evelyn to the east, Ularara to the south-east, Mootwingee to the south, Yungnulgra to the south-west, and Fitzgerald to the west.
History
Yantara is believed to derive from a local Aboriginal word and also names Yantara Station, one of the large pastoral leases that defined the district’s economy from the mid-19th century. Like most of the far west, the county was surveyed cadastrally well after pastoral settlement had already taken hold. New South Wales’ 141 counties were surveyed through the 19th century as the colony’s basic land-administration grid, ahead of and separate from local government; they still fix parish-based land descriptions in the state’s Torrens title system today.
