The county sits between the Darling River and the South Australian border, with the Silver City Highway running through it. It borders Menindee, Livingstone, Perry, Tara and Wentworth counties in New South Wales, and Hamley County across the South Australian border.
History
Windeyer County was named for Richard Windeyer, a barrister, politician and member of the NSW Legislative Council in the 1840s. The county remained sparsely settled pastoral country through the 19th century, with the Silver City Highway later opened as the main route linking Broken Hill to the Murray River towns. New South Wales’ 141 counties were surveyed through the 19th century as the colony’s basic land-administration grid, ahead of and separate from local government; they still fix parish-based land descriptions in the state’s Torrens title system today.
