Towns and Localities Today
Trida is the only settlement of note inside the county, a small roadside locality on the Cobb Highway between Ivanhoe and Balranald. The rest is sheep and cattle grazing country with scattered station homesteads such as Wee Elwah and Manfred.
Geography
Mossgiel is flat, semi-arid mallee and saltbush plain in the Western Division of New South Wales. Waverley Creek marks the county’s southern edge, and the country drains slowly toward the Lachlan River system to the north. Annual rainfall is low and unreliable, and the county has no permanent watercourses of its own.

The county was named after Mossgiel Station, one of the large pastoral runs established across the Western Division in the 19th century. Like the other far-western counties, it was proclaimed for the purpose of land titling on country that remained almost entirely under pastoral lease.
